Anzaghi Davide

Davide Anzaghi was born on 29 November 1936 in Milan, where be still lives and works both as a composer and as a teacher of composition at ihe G. Verdi Conservatory. He started studying music at a very early age wíth his father, who was also a musician. He completed his music studies at tbe G. Verdi Conservatory of Milan, obtaining his Diploma in Pianoforte, Choral Music, Conducting and Composition. He started his teaching career al the Donizetti Civic Institute, Bergamo, followed by a period al the Venturi School in Brescia, coming then to the Milan Conservatory, where he teaches composition. Despite some compositions of an academic nature written during his studies, it wasn't until 1970 that Anzaghi began to dedicate himself seriously to composing, starting a laborious creative activity, which brought him to write several chamber and symphonic works and to distinguish himself in important contexts. In both 1970 and 1971 he won the City of Treviso's Pianoforte Composition Competition with the pieces Segní and Ritografia. In 1973 his orchestral piece Limbale won first prize in the 10th Ferdinando Ballo International Composition Competition. And in 1974, Ausa for symphony orchestra won the Olivier Messiaen Competition whose jury, presided over by Messiaen himself, included G. Ligeti, W. Lutoslawski, I. Xenakis and Ton de Leeuw. Since then Anzaghi has written a significant number of chamber and symphonic works. His music has gradually acquired an unmistakable style and be has gained a notable reputation, with performances in many leading international concert Although Anzaghi started composing in the formative years of the avantgarde, he subsequently felt the need to move towards an euphonious and harmonic style of writing, and through tbe acoustic softness a dreamlike element is shown, a stylistic feature which is present till the beginning of the 80's. In his latest works Anzaghi has moved towards a more decisive spirit in which the rhythmic aspects are shown in sharper outlines. Starting with 1984 the composer turns to a vivid and dialectic way of writing. Besides a conspicuous pythagorean component, tbe basic poetic design comes out from it with its tendency io revalue the listening. In order lo favour it, the compositive design opens to the effect, while retaining the complexity of its organization.
